4 things you can do this Food waste action week: 18th – 24th March

A third of all food goes to waste. In the UK 75% of this waste is edible. That’s 15 billion meals being wasted – enough to feed the entire UK population 3 meals a day for 11 weeks.

Food waste isn’t intentional, but avoiding it can help our wallets, our peace of mind and our planet. For this year’s Food Waste Action Week take a stand against food waste with these simple tips:

What you can do

1. Read best before labels

Most products are required to have either a ‘Use By’ date or a ‘Best Before’ date. Products with a ‘Use By’ date must be consumed or frozen (if applicable, see product packaging) before the date stated and relates to product safety. ‘Best Before’ dates relate to product quality and are an indication of how long the quality will be retained for.  Providing food is stored in appropriate conditions – and has not become otherwise contaminated, it will be safe to consume for a period of time after the ‘Best Before’ date has passed.

2. Plan your food shop

Decide what meal you want and how many people you need to serve before hitting the shops. If you need some meal inspiration, check out our suggestions here. Only buy the ingredients, you need and make sure you check you don’t already have it at home before buying more.

3. Storing

Did you know apples are best kept in the fridge in packaging and bananas prefer being outside the fridge but in a cool dark place (and away from other fruit and veg)? Salad, lettuce and spinach all last longer without moisture, so keep them in the fridge in their original packaging with a paper towel.

4. Save meals through TGTG

You can get discounted fresh food with our TGTG bags. You’d be helping prevent food waste and saving money at the same time: a win-win! Download the Too Good to Go app and check out your closest One Stop.
